Our Library Has a Valuable Book…

One November evening my wife said, “You have to read an article in the Variety section of today’s paper.”  It told of a best-selling, half-century-old book of political fiction by Fletcher Knebel.  The name Knebel was familiar to us, since he was a regular columnist in our Minneapolis newspaper about the time this book, Night of Camp David  was published.  President Kennedy called Knebel “Washington’s most widely read and most widely plagiarized commentator.”  The book had made news because of a far-fetched story about a president of the United States who was thought to be mentally unfit for his office, and what should the young senator from Iowa and other readers of the country do about it?  The book is now so popular it is being republished, and Amazon is advertising used copies at up to $199.99.

My wife went right to our (Nokomis Square Cooperative ) library and found that our copy is a first edition.  She immediately took it out to see first-hand what had made it so popular a second time, and we have now both read it.  The book is a pretty good read, especially if you like political mysteries.  The copy is now back in the library for the pleasure of more readers, along with a copy of the newspaper article.  But, please, if you take it out, so return it to the library.  Amazon thinks it is valuable.
